Velton Cummings JR Obituary

In Loving Memory of Velton Cummings Jr.

November 26, 1962 – September 18, 2025

Velton Cummings Jr. was born on November 26, 1962, in Washington, D.C., to Velton Cummings Sr. and Dorothy J. Cummings, who preceded him to heaven. Velton began his educational journey at the Phyllis Wheatley YWCA preschool, then attended Scott Montgomery Elementary before transferring to Seaton Elementary near his childhood home. His schooling continued at Robert Gould Shaw Jr. High and culminated with his graduation from Francis L. Cardozo Senior High School in 1980.

After high school, Velton answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Air Force, earning his Veteran status with pride and honor. Following his service, he pursued culinary training at DC Central Kitchen, embracing his love for food and community.

Velton’s path led him across the country in search of new beginnings, eventually bringing him to New York City—a place that became his final home and resting place. Velton passed away on Thursday, September 18, 2025, at Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx.

Velton found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved curling up with a good book or watching a classic horror film. His daily walks through the neighborhood were sacred rituals—often ending with a hot sausage and a quiet moment in the park, watching the world go by and soaking in the fresh air. These small joys painted the canvas of a life well-lived.

He leaves behind a loving family: sisters Legerthian (Jeannie) and Cathy, brother Vejon, sister-in-law Sherron, his lifelong friends Michael Johnson & Josephine Lemon-Lett, four nieces, one nephew, two great-nieces, one great-nephew, and a wide circle of loving cousins and dear friends who will forever cherish his memory.

Velton has been reunited with his mom and dad, and his two favorite cousins Theresa L Stewart (affectionately called) sister cousin and Rickey Hawkins.

In keeping with Velton’s wishes, there will be no formal memorial service. Instead, he asked that those who knew him remember the good times, the laughter, and the love. Let his memory live on in the stories we tell, the smiles we share, and the quiet moments of reflection.

To honor Velton’s life and legacy, consider donating to the American Kidney Fund, supporting those affected by kidney disease. Contributions can be made online at www.kidneyfund.org.

A limb has fallen from the sibling tree that says grieve not for me remember the BEST TIMES the laughter, the joy the good life I lived a happy life and now I will live through you.
Gone brother but never forgotten
Forever you will be in our hearts
Love you brother
