Raoul Maurice Bell transitioned at Richmond University Medical Center on October 6, 2025, in Staten Island, New York, at the age of 72.
Raoul was born on November 9, 1952, at Harlem Hospital in New York City to the late Novarro and Clara Bell.
He attended P.S. 18—remembered as the “The Red School House”—and later I.S. 27, where his athletic talent earned him a spot on the varsity basketball team. He continued to shine on the court at Curtis High School, graduating in 1970. Raoul’s dedication and drive were evident both on and off the court, qualities that carried him through life.
Committed to furthering his education, Raoul went on to attend John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City.
Over the years, Raoul held several positions. He worked as a hospital security officer, a landscaper for the New York City Parks Department, and a New York City Corrections Officer.
Raoul carried the energy, grit, and heart of New York City. He cherished early mornings on the ferry and basking in the ambiance of all that Manhattan had to offer. Raoul embodied the true spirit of New York—tough when needed, but always grounded in love and loyalty. He either liked you or he didn't.
He found joy in the simple things. He enjoyed attending Broadway plays, fine dining and playing the lottery. He played the lottery daily in hopes that tomorrow might bring a lucky win.
He now joins his older brother, John N. “Bebomb” Bell, in heaven. Raoul leaves behind his son Joaquin Bell and daughter Candis Johnson; his grandchildren, Maurice, Jaicob, and Nadiyah; his siblings, Gale Dakers, Mario Bell, Dawn Daniels, Robin Bell, and Andre Bell; and his cousin, Virgil Spriggs. He also leaves behind his lifelong friends—Maurice, Robert, Rickey, Wallace, Keith and Earl—along with a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, other relatives and many dear friends.
Raoul will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
