Michael A. Watkins, the son of the late Tom Watkins and Ludis W. Cox, peacefully
transitioned from this life to glory on Friday, September 19, 2025, at 6:12 PM at
Richmond University Medical Center in Staten Island, New York.
Born on June 2, 1959, in Staten Island, Michael was the third of four children. At an
early age, he gave his life to Christ at Trinity Presbyterian Church in West Point,
Mississippi, where he was a devoted member until relocating back to Staten Island.
Michael was a proud graduate of West Point High School, where his athletic talent
earned him recognition as an All-American linebacker. He went on to play college
football for three years, first attending West Virginia State University on scholarship
before transferring to Mississippi State University, where he earned a Bachelor of
Arts degree. He later pursued higher education, earning a master’s degree from the
College of Mount Saint Vincent.
While in high school, Michael met Ms. Sherry Lyles, with whom he shared the
blessing of four children: daughter Alshaunta Lyles (Columbus, MS), son Zachery
Lyles (Columbus, MS), daughter Menarda Hayes (Arlington, VA), and son Brandon
Lyles (Brooklyn, NY).
Michael dedicated more than 20 years of his career to teaching and coaching in New
York City schools. He served as a physical education teacher and junior varsity
football coach at New Dorp High School, and also taught at Boys and Girls High
School, The New School for Art and Science, and International Community High
School. Passionate about education and mentorship, Michael sought to make a
lasting difference in the lives of his students, both on and off the field.
Affectionately known as “Uncle Mike,” he was beloved by his nieces and nephews.
Full of energy and joy, he was the life of every gathering—children especially
looked forward to his presence, often saying, “Where is Uncle Mike?” knowing that
fun was soon to follow.
Michael was preceded in death by his father, Tom Watkins; mother, Ludis W. Cox;
stepfather, Daniel Cox; and stepbrother, Harold Daniel Cox.
He leaves to cherish his memory his four children: Alshaunta Lyles, Zackory Lyles,
Menarda Hayes (Bryant), and Brandon Lyles (Brianna); five grandchildren: Jaymiah
Saddler, Mekhi Lyles, Brianna Lyles, Brooklyn Lyles, and Braylon Hayes; his
siblings: Tony Watkins (Margaret), Deborah Collins, and Jennifer Watkins;
stepsister Vivan Renee Taylor; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended
family, and friends who will miss him dearly. Michael’s legacy of faith, love,
laughter, and service will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew him.
